"You can't help respecting anyone who can spell Tuesday, even if he doesn’t spell it right; but spelling isn’t everything. There are days when spelling Tuesday simply doesn’t count.”
- Winnie the Pooh
Sometimes, as homeschooling mothers, we can get so wrapped up in our lesson plans and curriculum that it is very easy to lose sight of what really counts. If we are not careful, we end up spending our days trying to check all of the boxes, complete the never-ending stack of worksheets, and rushing to make it to the homeschool coop field trip or any one of the many other activities available to us. But in our busyness and sometimes even frenzy, we may be losing sight of what truly counts. Please don’t misunderstand me, I whole heartedly believe that providing our children with the very best education possible is a noble and very necessary part of our duty as parents. But what is the very best? I am reminded of Mary and Martha in the tenth chapter of Luke. Martha was busy serving, busy doing. I tend to be a Martha. Mary, on the other hand, sat at the Saviour’s feet and heard his word. Jesus says in verses 41 and 42, “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Pause for just a moment and let His words sink in. It is a struggle that we all face to varying degrees. Let us choose that good part.
May we ever put Him first in our hearts and in our homeschools. May love and compassion reign. Mothers, take time to listen to the hearts of your precious children. Hold on to the fleeting moments of their youth and use each second that you can to point them to His love and His Word. Fill your school days with joy and laughter and create precious memories. And above all, lets teach them what really counts: knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and the true wisdom and peace that can only be found by sitting at His feet.
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” -Proverbs 9:10
May the Lord richly bless you as you live for Him,
